Jeff is a graduate of two bookbinding programs but sees the mastery of this craft as a life-long effort. He regularly attends workshops and seminars to learn additional skills and keep up with new developments in the field. Formal Training The American Academy of Bookbinding. Telluride, CO. The diploma program at AAB provides specialized training in fine leather binding through a series of intensive short courses over at least five years, combined with directed independent study and practical work. Jeff studied French-Style fine binding with master binder, Tini Miura. North Bennet Street School. Boston, MA. This two-year, full-time bookbinding program is a hands on training program which provides a solid foundation in a wide range of traditional bookbinding skills. Students create models of a wide variety of historical binding structures with some emphasis on repair and conservation. Work Experience Jeff further developed his bookbinding skills on the job at Harcourt Bindery and Harvard University. Jeff has an additional 10 years experience as a picture framer, a profession that helped hone his skills in the art of presentation. Professional Affiliations The Guild is a national organization of bookbinders, book artists, calligraphers, paper makers, and printers. It sponsors a yearly conference on Standards of Excellence in Bookbinding and frequent traveling exhibitions of members works. Jeff is Chair of the New England Chapter which meets several times each year for presentations and workshops Jeff is an associate member of this UK organization which is devoted to the maintenance and improvement of standards of design and craft in hand bookbinding by means of exhibition, teaching and publications. Designer Bookbinders publishes an annual journal, The New Bookbinder American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works Jeff is an associate member of AIC which exists to support the conservation professionals who preserve our cultural heritage. AIC plays a crucial role in establishing and upholding professional standards, promoting research and publications, providing educational opportunities, and fostering the exchange of knowledge among conservators, allied professionals, and the public. |
